Snipe

Great excitement this morning.

I was loading the dishwasher after breakfast when P came into the kitchen holding his binoculars and calling "Come quick - a snipe!"

There was indeed a snipe down in the ditch which runs along the side of our garden beside the sheep field.  He or she (I think they both look very similar) was busily digging about in the mud and you could clearly see the long bill.

I understand that snipe are resident here, up on the moorland but this is the first time we have seen one down here close to.

The picture is not of today's visitor - he/she was moving about too fast to get a good shot.

    1. Hi Amy. Thanks for visiting my blog! Yes, we love to see the wildlife that pops in and out of our garden. We regularly have garden birds, pheasants and rabbits but also occasionally see more elusive creatures passing through on their way to somewhere more exciting. I love your travel blog posts by the way. Such fantastic places to visit.

  2. Snipe are residents in the Yorkshire Dales too - up on the hills especially in Summer.

    1. Yes, ours are usually up on the fells so we were quite excited to see one down here in our ditch!

  3. It's always a thrill to see a new bird in the yard. It doesn't happen very often, but we have the birding books and the binoculars at the ready for when it does! I love to see the different kinds of "backyard birds" people have visiting.
