Big and Blowsy

Our peony that is, not me.

After a few hours of warm sunshine on Monday - 18 degrees in the afternoon! - the blooms opened and put on quite a show.  I love them but they are short lived performers.

I took a couple of photos before Wednesday's forecast rain arrives to flatten them.

Today (Tuesday) has started off bright and breezy but cool.  I am having a quick tidy up around the house as we are expecting a visit from P's niece.  He hasn't seen her since the late 1970s when he left Australia to move back to the UK.  We are hoping it will be warm enough to enjoy tea and cakes outside this afternoon, before the weather front reaches us.

  1. I'm glad I bought some indoors because the rain and wind has flattened them over the last few days

    1. Such a shame to see them so battered by the elements. They are so beautiful I would love to enjoy them for longer.

  2. Beautiful blooms. We are a few weeks behind you here. My peony is a little strange as every year it's like it's on steroids. At the moment it is up to my shoulder-I'm 5'7", and has over 100 buds on it! It will be full of blooms in a couple of weeks but, without fail, it will pour with rain a few days later and I will end up with a carpet of white petals on the lawn!!

    1. Ours is not so prolific but the few blooms we have are so gorgeous it is hard not to just stand and look at them.

  3. They are such beautiful blooms aren't they? Shame that they last for such a short while - rather like the lives of human beings.

  5. I adore peonies but as you say - short lived. Not exciting foliage for the rest of the year either.

    1. Luckily ours get covered by other plants once the blooms are finished so we enjoy a different show until next year.
