A week ago our small local library invited all members to come along and borrow as many books, games and jigsaw puzzles as they could carry as the library was going to be closed for the duration of the lockdown period.
We could only find six books that we wanted to read. The lovely librarian, however, suggested that we also borrow one of the few kindles that they loan out to people on request.
It is a very basic model with around 100 books preloaded. It is locked to prevent any additional books being downloaded.
I have never used a kindle before but this one is so basic that it looks quite simple to use. Scroll through all the book titles, decide which one to read then just tap on it to start.
I shall have to work out how to discard a book if I change my mind part way through.
We are keeping it to one side until we have finished the remaining "real" books.
It is freezing cold here today. The forecast is for bright but cold and breezy weather for the next few days. At least we have no snow !
I have an Ipad that my son bought for me, similar to a kindle and I have an app on this that is connected to my local Library and I can download books from the Library for nothing.
ReplyDeleteI don't think you can beat holding a proper book but when I'm at a loss I do download them from the Library site.
Maybe your local library does a similar scheme.
Just going to start on a new jigsaw puzzle. All needleworked out at the moment, lol

Our little library doesn't offer that facility unfortunately. I am not sure they have the resources to set it up - too small and limited funds.
DeleteWe just had a little flurry of snow but it didn't settle. I have just started reading "The Body" by Bill Bryson. It's not the kind of book you can canter through. In spite of The Plague, I can tell that it is going to take me a while to read. Is Peregrine reading "The Peregrine: The Hill of Summer & Diaries" by J.A. Baker?
ReplyDeleteBoth books sound interesting. Perhaps Mr Amazon could deliver them. Anything to keep Lord P busy. He is going stir crazy already.
DeleteIf Peregrine took up embroidery it might calm him down. A nice set of antimacassars for your sofa would be a good start.
DeleteHi, Sorry to ask, as I'm new here, who's Peregrine?
DeleteAnonymous. I always refer to my husband just as P as he prefers to remain anonymous too. Yorkshire Pudding has decided that it stands for Peregrine, as befitting a lord of the manor. If only he could see him in real life!
DeleteThank you for the reply, it sort of begs more questions, but I will leave it there :)
DeleteI may be more of a lurker, but I am enjoying your blog, thank you.
Jane
Thank you Jane. I hope all is well with you, wherever you are.
DeleteI'm sorry I didn't realise you had replied :)
DeleteI'm good thanks, life close to Chester plods on. :)

Could I recommend: A Month In The Country JayCee? A splendid read and on Kindle.
ReplyDeleteThanks northsider. I'll take a look at that one too. Cheers!
DeleteI shall be interested to hear how you like the Kindle. I have always liked the feel of a book in my hands and felt I would not like a Kindle but I may be wrong. Do tell me what you think please.
ReplyDeleteI still have a few more books to read first but I shall certainly report back once I have tried it out.
DeleteI haven't got to the stage of reading yet because my "to do" list is too long. I used a Kindle in the days when I lived half time in New Zealand. It was so much easier than carrying books for all the plane journeys.
ReplyDeleteI shall give it a try when I finish my current book. There should be something on there that I will like.
DeleteI'm surprised you don't have a Kindle already, JayCee, given the amount of travelling you get up too! They're a godsend when you're away from home and they don't take up your baggage allowance!
