Pressure

A few weeks ago one of the essential parts of my pressure cooker broke - I think I may have mentioned it in a blog post.  I sent a message to the manufacturer asking them how I could order a replacement.

No reply after several weeks and a couple of prompts so I have given up and started looking to buy a new one - but definitely from a different manufacturer as this one is obviously unreliable.  I have tried my slow cooker but I still prefer the convenience of a pressure cooker.

I first looked on John Lewis's website but they only have two  stovetop cookers and neither of them suitable.  I don't want an electric one as I need something that can be used in the event of a power failure - something we occasionally experience during winter storms.

Browsing the magic of the internet I came across the Lakeland website - I had completely forgotten about them.  I used to buy their products many years ago and was always pleased with them.

Ten minutes later and one of their stainless steel pressure cookers is ordered and hopefully on its way to me soon - provided Hermes doesn't lose it.

  1. Hermes give a crap service as you have illustrated before. Only this morning I rescued a package from a neighbour's doorstep. She is away on holiday! Anybody could have nicked it.

    1. A couple of weeks ago I ordered something for a birthday gift. It was supposed to be delivered on a Thursday. Each evening from the deivery due date onwards I received an email telling me there was a slight delay and it would be delivered the next day. It finally arrived the following Wednesday, three days after the person's birthday.

    2. I heard on Radio 4 today that Hermes are about to recruit a further 1500 delivery workers. Requirements include: Must be prepared to treat the public with disdain.

  2. My pressure cooker is indispensable during preserving season, but do you think I could source replacement seals when I needed them? With a 'prestigious' brand name I would have thought it possible to get them anywhere that brand advertises itself. Turns out it was only made for the Indian market so how it turned up being sold in NZ (or possibly given away as a promotional with something we bought on the farm) is anyone's guess. I did eventually find seals in some not-advertised warehouse of said prestigious company in Auckland NZ. When the guy who runs that warehouse retires, I guess I'll have to retire the pot.

    1. Sounds like the same brand. Not recommended if you want longevity!

  3. I really like cooking but have never used a pressure cooker ..... I think I’m a bit frightened of them ! I guess, after all these years, I haven’t needed one ! I love Lakeland ...... they have all those things that you think you need but really don’t ( apart from pressure cookers and a few other things ! ) XXXX

    1. I have used pressure cookers for years, probably around 35 now, and really miss having one at the moment. I am hoping the new one lasts longer than this rubbish one.

  4. I use my pressure cooker in the winter to cook beans, lentils and chick peas. They need a fraction of the cooking time in an ordinary pot. K uses it to boil his sheeps stomachs and unmentionables. Definitely and essential

  6. "We" buy all our plastic boxes from Lakeland. We have a special cupboard for them. Matching box with lid can be a real challenge.

  7. I have great admiration for people who own and use pressure cookers. Memories of my mother's hissing spitting version have stayed with me so they've never been on my 'wanted' list. Here's hoping your delivery service gives you good service this time.

    1. I shall just add an extra week onto the stated delivery date to be more realistic 🤨

  8. I'm with Cathy - that's my experience with pressure cookers too. Once the little gadget on top blew right off and hit the ceiling. I expect they are more reliable now.

    1. I have never had a problem with mine, so far, except for the little plastic fitting which perishes with age. Then I can never seem to get a replacement for it. Built in obsolescence, to make us buy another pot!

  9. I had a pressure cooker many years ago, but I was terrified of it and rarely used it...no idea what happened to it but I found the weight in the back of a cupboard a while ago! I used to buy a lot of things from Lakeland. For years I have had set of 4 inch square plastic boxes that are perfect for freezing a portion of home cooked meal for later. Have you tried the steamer bags from them? I use them for most veg and they can be washed and re-used too, unlike some other makes.

    1. Thanks Frances. I haven't tried their steamer bags, although I do have an adjustable steamer basket that fits most pans and I use that for my veg. Come to think of it, I am sure that came from Lakeland many years ago.

  10. Good old Lakeland! I not really used one, maybe once about 50 years ago. You're obviously keen on them.
    Hugs, x.
