On Sunday evening we were invited to a friend's house for her birthday celebration meal.
Although we have known this couple for ages, and socialised with them on many occasions it was the first time that I had been inside their house.
They live in a lovely old traditional Manx stone cottage, with a huge inglenook fireplace and lots of intriguing nooks and crannies.
One of the rooms leading off from the dining room has been converted into the Clock Room. Her husband has a passion for repairing and restoring clocks and over the years has amassed an eclectic collection of beautiful and interesting clocks of all types. (I counted at least 10 Grandfather clocks dotted around the house).
He showed me around the impressive collection displayed in the Clock Room. When I asked him how many he had in there he thought for a moment and said, probably around 200.
When I asked my friend how long it had taken her husband to change all his clocks back an hour for the weekend, she said that he had started on Friday!
Now, that is a passion.
(It seemed too intrusive to ask to take a photograph, so this is just a photo copied from the web...)
I guess that the meal was well-seasoned with thyme?
ReplyDeleteGeddit?
HAW-HAW-HAW! I'm so funny! I should have written for Morecambe and Wise!
Oh, excuse me. I have just split my sides.
DeleteAmazing! I would wonder who dusts them all?!
ReplyDeleteHe does. His wife dare not touch them!
Delete"Who knows where the time goes?"
ReplyDeleteYour friends husband certainly does.
I would like to know how does that person change the time on my mobile phone and tablet every Spring and autumn? They always change them when I'm asleep,
I think it must be the same person who gets into my wardrobe when I have been eating cakes and makes all my clothes shrink.
DeleteI have a little elf who folds up my clothes and leaves them on my bed.
ReplyDeleteAll those ticks would make tinnitus seem very tame.
ReplyDeleteFunnily enough, even wearing my hearing aids, I didn't hear any of them ticking. Although I did hear all the chimes at each quarter hour whilst we were there. It was quite musical by 11 p.m.!
DeleteMaybe some of you persuade your little invisible person to ‘come on down’ and change the time on my car’s clock. I hate to admit it baffles me.....so for several months of the year is 1hr fast or slow....not sure which.
ReplyDeleteDoes your friend’s husband wear a watch?
My car's clock is only correct for 6 months of the year. Far too complicated to change it!
DeleteYes, he does wear a watch 😁
I can just imagine them all chiming in the middle of the night.
ReplyDeleteEspecially if one or two of them are a minute or two slow.
DeleteOh I wished you had asked for a picture. Clocks are my 'thing' as well. I have them scattered all over the house though and when they strike the house, they each have their own 'voice'. I lie in bed at night and drowsily count them off: there's the cuckoo. That's the banjo clock in the kitchen. The Westminster chimes from the livingroom, the tinkle of the mantle clock in the library, the big two tone grandmother clock. The horse clock on the stairs... I love a quiet house and the sound of a clock marking time.
ReplyDeleteI would have loved to have taken a photo, but it seemed rude. There was such a huge variety of different types of clock, all fascinating in their own way.
