Do you remember that old Cadbury's TV ad with the "man in black" jumping off cliffs and other dangerous stunts in order to ensure the lady got her box of chocolates? All because the lady loves Milk Tray.
That ad came to mind this week when a local news item revealed that a 28 year old man from Scotland apparently crossed the Irish Sea on a jet ski - a journey of four and a half hours - to land at Ramsey, then walked the fifteen miles to Douglas. He had come over to visit his girlfriend and spent the weekend going out to nightclubs, something which he presumably cannot currently do back home.
He has now received a four week jail sentence for breaking the island's coronavirus laws.
How anyone would contemplate crossing the Irish Sea on a jet ski, in the middle of December is beyond belief. Surely it is not 1st April already?
In other news, our offer on the cottage has been accepted and we are waiting for a building survey report. Full steam ahead... hopefully.
It's got to be love? It's a bit harsh when the ferries and airports have never closed. I could fly to work in London.
ReplyDeleteAre you going to buy new furniture or will be taking your stuff with you?
Love? More like missing a good night out probably. Although the ferries are still running, our borders are closed to non residents so he would not have been allowed in via the legal methods. Silly boy.
DeleteWe shall have to get rid of some of our furniture as the cottage is half the size of our current house. Not sure yet where we are going to put everything, but it does have a large garage!
Pleased to hear that Lord Peregrine also likes the cottage. I wonder what he would do to bring a small box of "Milk Tray" to you. He would probably swim through a pool filled with hungry crocodiles or worse still have dinner with Boris Johnson and Piers Morgan.
ReplyDeleteI was never a fan of Milk Tray. I prefer a dark, bitter chocolate, or those rather nice Lindt ones. Yum.
DeleteDave Allen, I'm sure I remember, did a great spoof of the Milk Tray adverts. Sadly, I can't see it anywhere on YouTube!
ReplyDeleteOh, shame. That would have been good to see again.
DeleteOh so you liked the cottage when you saw it. You dropped that in quietly.
ReplyDeleteI didn't want to jinx anything. If I get too excited before the contracts are exchanged I fear I may end up being gazumped or something!
DeleteWell it wouldn't have been too bad to have said "wow I really liked it inside" after all the build up.
DeleteWell, I did really like it. There are a couple of things that need to be changed, but otherwise it is just what I hoped for. P was quietly enthusiastic too, which is unusual for him.
DeleteThank you. I am surprised you are getting a survey.
DeleteWell as it dates from the 1860s we just want to make sure there are no hidden surprises. It does seem to have been well maintained but it will be worth the cost just for peace of mind.
DeleteYes, I think the guy just got "cabin fever" from being stuck in his house too long and wanted to get out to party. Desperate measures...and all that! Crazy!
ReplyDeleteYou made an offer on the cottage and haven't shared any photos?! What?!
It's not ours just yet. Don't want to tempt fate. I shall more than likely bore everyone with photos when I am more confident that nothing can go wrong!.
DeleteFingers crossed your house move goes swimmingly, but not in the Irish Sea!
ReplyDeleteI hope I shall sleep better once it is all going ahead smoothly.
DeleteI thought prison was a bit harsh. Surely a fine would have been better, after all they are always complaining about the prisons being full.

Our government are very keen to send the message that the law is there for a very good reason. We can't afford to have an outbreak of the virus. Our small hospital would be overwhelmed.
DeleteJail is hopefully more of a deterrent than a fine!
He had to walk 15 miles? Didn't he have enough fuel to get to Douglas. Don't they have petrol stations in Ramsey?
ReplyDeleteHe could have got the bus, silly boy.
DeleteI'm very pleased to hear your cottage news. As for the jetski I'm not sure how anyone managed to do that without refuelling several times regardless of the sea and weather conditions. Seems implausible.
ReplyDeleteWe had just that same conversation earlier today, Graham. There are several elements to this story that just don't ring true. I am not quite sure what is the purpose of allowing this story to be reported if it is all a hoax. Very strange indeed.
DeleteStrange but funny nevertheless! Congrats on your (possibly) new purchase. Look forward to the photos.
ReplyDeleteJust waiting for the paperwork now.
DeleteGreat news about your cottage. I agree you should get a survey for peace of mind. We bought our house from a relatives estate years ago then after a year we started to get big problems with damp in our fitted wardrobes on an outside wall. We eventually got an expert in who told us that chimney breasts had been removed and instead of disposing of the rubble the builder had just pushed it down into the cavity hence allowing dampness to 'jump' the damp course and also we now only had single brick between us and the outside world instead of the normal double walls. We then had to take out all the fitted wardrobes in both bedrooms on that wall and get a new wall built! Not only losing us part of the bedrooms but then also requiring major redecorating works. It was an expense we could ill afford at the time and we had to move in with my parents for two weeks with our children as there was nowhere to sleep! So, yes, get a survey, its well worth it, I wish we had!!
ReplyDeleteI didn't hear that story about the jet skier but then I try to avoid the news these days! There's no cure for idiots unfortunately. Perhaps his jail sentence will smarten him up!! x
It may make others take more notice of the law!
DeleteYes, I saw the story. I believe he expected the journey to take one hour, but the weather was dreadful. I can't see any point in sending him to prison. Romance is dead.
ReplyDeleteIt seems to have died quite a long time ago.
DeleteWow, young love?? Delighted to hear your offer on the cottage has been accepted.. our move really starts after Christmas Fingers crossed we get lucky too!
ReplyDeleteNow that's craziness! But as the song says, "It take all kinds of kinds!"
