May 2008

This is a very lazy post. Today a prompt popped up on my social media feed reminding me of what we were up to in May 2008.

A few photos follow - you can probably guess where we were....

  1. Is it Cuba? Wherever it is you've got loads of memories. Hope you'll be travelling again soon.

    1. You win tonight's star prize Linda.
Yes, we spent a week in Havana and saw the beauty and the hardship, meeting many strong and resilient people along the way.

  2. Were you in Wolverhampton? I have never been there so I don't really know what it's like in Wolverhampton.

  3. It does look like Cuba with those nineteen fifties automobiles. Did Fidel put you and P up for the week?

  5. I had to get to the last picture before I could venture a guess. Not sure if it's open for travel now or not. I'm sure it's an interesting place.

    1. It was certainly interesting Bob. We only visited Havana so didn't see any of the beach areas. I think they were quite different, made for tourists.

  6. It was only when I saw the line of cars that Cuba came to mind. I've flown over the island on my way from Miami to Grand Cayman, and was very impressed by how organised the agriculture seemed (from the sky).

    1. Yes, they depend on growing their own, at least they certainly did back when we visited.

  7. I thought 'Cuba' as soon as I saw the pictures. Barbara Kingsolver gave us a glimpse of it in her book 'Unsheltered' I would be much interested to hear your thoughts on it. To be honest, I thought it was a place Americans could not visit. Mr. Google tells me that I am wrong. The things I learn from reading blogs!

    1. I seem to remember that at the time we went there US citizens could not visit, but that may have changed now. There were mainly Canadian and European visitors then.
The local people we spoke to were ambivalent about allowing US tourism. They desperately needed the income but didn't want the things that would inevitably follow (such as the big chains and franchises..McDonalds et al). The city's infrastructure was crumbling, great chunks of masonry falling from buildings and people crammed into small apartments. It was sad to see that beautiful place falling apart.

  8. I thought it was Sheffield until I remembered they don't make cigars there, only roll ups.
