A Morning Out

Just a short post today.

We drove an hour from home here in Ramsey at the northern end of the island down to Castletown in the south, as we had arranged to meet up with friends for coffee.

It was a lovely sunny day and we enjoyed catching up with the couple as we haven't seen them for a few years .

We paused to admire the house where Captain John Quilliam lived.

He served as first lieutenant on HMS Victory at the Battle of Trafalgar. He was a farmer's son who was impressed into the Royal Navy in 1794

We also strolled past the Old Grammar School.  It was built around 1200AD as the first church for the settlement that grew up around Castle Rushen, later becoming a school for boys. It is the oldest roofed structure still standing on the Isle of Man today.

  3. The island has quite a foreign look about it - the architecture is lovely- have you always lived there?

    1. Weaver, no. We moved here in 1991 and are still learning all about its rich history.

  4. I see the umbrellas have found their way to the I o M. That street looks beautiful, as Weaver says, it looks rather foreign; Italian even.

    1. It's not quite like that in reality, Cro. Much less glamorous!

  8. Looks like a grand day.

I'm gathering you haven't ruled out any particular places on to live IoM as long as the home is in walking distance of a village/town, yes? Good luck with the continuing house hunt.

    1. There are a couple of locations we are not too keen on but we are hoping to find our ideal home anywhere in the north, west or south within walking distance of facilities. We don't want much do we!!

  9. I love seeing the Isle in the sun given that the one and only stay I had there was so awful. I'm away from home at the moment so missing quite a few posts unfortunately.
