Last night P filled a hot water bottle for me as I suffer from very cold feet when I get into bed. It did help and I was very grateful, however, I discovered this morning that he hadn't securely screwed the top on so it had been gradually leaking overnight. I hadn't wet the bed honest!
As I have mentioned here before, for many years I have been in the habit of taking a couple of glasses of wine every evening with our meal. About three weeks ago I found that my usual tipple of choice didn't seem to taste as good and I found I didn't really fancy a drink anyway. I had also noticed at around the same time that my cheeks were looking quite flushed. Whether this was due to the incipient cold virus or alcohol related rosacea I don't know but I made the decision there and then to give up my usual evening drink.
I haven't missed it really, although I did have a glass of Italian fizz last night. I am not sure if I feel any different from my abstinence but then I have been a little poorly anyway for the past couple of weeks.
My liver and my bank balance will be very grateful I am sure.
A few hot whiskeys or Irish coffees are just the ticket this weather. Soon you'll be cracking open the champagne for your new house celebration.ReplyDelete
You are tempting me back into bad habits!Delete
Hate it when a hot water bottle leaks in the night, especially when I had to change the whole bed!ReplyDelete
So annoying. I think I'll forgo a hot water bottle tonight, unless I do it myself!Delete
When I was about to have my first covid jab, I stopped drinking as they said it might be a good idea and for two weeks after. So far, I haven't had a drink at home since and haven't missed it at all.Thats been 8 months . I do have a glass if family or friends come for dinner and when I eat out but not on a daily basis anymore. Don't think I feel any better though !!! I'm sure that you will feel so much better once you get the house sorted. There's nothing nicer than a hot water bottle ..... so comforting. XXXXReplyDelete
Eight months is a good long while, Jackie. I hope to keep up my new healthy habit, for the sake of my liver xxxDelete
I recently read a most enlightening new article entitled "What Alcohol Does To Your Body" and was actually blown away reading facts I was unaware of! I almost always have a glass of wine with dinner - sometimes with a refill when watching TV later. I'm going to stop, or at least cut back, because I know it's really just a habit which I should break. If you are interested - here's the link. It's not just our liver, read about our brain, our stomach etc. All young people should read this as well as us.ReplyDelete
Hot water bottles are miracles from our British childhood when there was no central heating in the house! I still love to have one nightly during the winter months - and my American husband is hooked too! Leaking ones are not good - and a knitted cover is always the best.
Enjoy your day - raising a glass of Fentiman's Rose Lemonade - looks just like a good rosé. . . . . .but much healthier for us!
Thanks for the link Mary. Let's hope I haven't left it too late!Delete
I have an electric under blanket to warm the bed which I put on low a couple of hours before bedtime. It takes the chill off the cold sheets. I also wear a pair of thick loose socks for a while and then kick them off before I go to sleep. I hope you soon feel better.ReplyDelete
Thanks Rachel. I have some of the socks the airlines give out on longhaul flights. I think I'll dig those out and wear them to bed.Delete
I've only been on an Aeroflot longish haul and they gave us a blanket. I put the blanket over my head!Delete
I did that once on a flight to Cape Town. It was the only way to hide from all the cigarette smoke wafting back from the rows at the front!Delete
Sorry to hear of your lack of wellness and presence (I was looking for the opposite of 'lack') of loose stoppers.ReplyDelete
I, too, in 2017 when I had a kidney blocked and had emergency surgery went off my two glasses of wine with dinner for several years. I've got my taste for wine back but now only drink occasionally. I'm sure it's doing me good. Hmmm.
I'm sure it is too Graham. Your brain still seems to be functioning exceptionally well, unlike mine.Delete
It's really decadent to get into bed with an electric underblanket still switched on.ReplyDelete
Naughty but nice.Delete
My husband warms my feet. I told him years back that it is the fine print on the marriage contract. He's all cozied up in bed, and I tuck my feet behind his knees and he yelps and my feet slowly warm. It's a tradition. Bonus? He doesn't leak all over the bed.ReplyDelete
Ha, ha. I really hope that P doesn't start to leak!Delete
Everyone I say I am going to give up my daily glass, or two, of wine it never lasts. Red wine is a tonic. Just in case you decide to take it up again.ReplyDelete
I'm looking forward to electric blanket time but it's at least a month for FF yet. Love those airline socks. I've still got a few pairs too. Light and loose
I'll take gin with my tonic!Delete
Electric under blanket just gone on for me (on low). My husband's 11 yrs older than me so feels the cold more and has his on higher.ReplyDelete
I sleep better without alcohol I have to confess, but I do look forward to Wine Night on a Friday (and if stressed in the week, I will have a cider!)
My socks are warming on the radiator!Delete
A hottie a night is what the doctor ordered. Yes truly, he said, just warm the extremities, the rest can look after itself. Wear a beanie to keep your ears warm as well he said. I always have a cover on it, first because it’s too hot to begin with- then it keeps it warm. Nothing worse than a cold hot water bottle!ReplyDelete
Mine has a fleecy cover. Very snuggly.Delete
I too suffer from cold feet in the night - they can be as warm as toast when I get into bed and then as I warm up and get snug my feet get colder and colder. And I don't drink wine or anything else.ReplyDelete
Bed socks seem to be the answer Weaver.Delete
I give up drinking every January. I never miss alcohol during my dry month, but my drink of choice is beer and I always go back to it around mid-February or so. I really enjoy it but I don’t drink every day, usually just on weekends and at the occasional social event (which is usually on a weekend). Not defending or justifying, just explaining. If it were to become a problem or if a family member wanted me to stop, I would do do. For now, though, while exercising moderation, I think I’m OK.ReplyDelete
That sounds pretty restrained and sensible Bob.Delete
I brought 15 litres of wine from France, but when that's gone I shan't be buying wine every day. In France I paid €10 for 5 litres; here it's that for one bottle. What does water taste like?ReplyDelete
In some parts of the UK it seems to taste of chlorine. My sister's tap water in West London tastes foul.Delete
Have you tried a wheat bag....2 minutes in the microwave and also much more " bendy" round your feet. Just be careful not to overheat them as they can apparently set on fire!ReplyDelete
I am thinking of buying one Frances . I once scalded my hand when filling a hot water bottle. A wheat bag should be safer.Delete
No wine? Gulp!ReplyDelete
I know 😳Delete
Hope you feel back to normal soon, JayCee.ReplyDelete
I'm not much a drinker at all but occasionally have a glass of wine with my Sunday dinner. Yesterday, by the time dinner was cooked I'd had 2 large glasses and poured myself a 3rd; I just fancied another one. I drank about half of the third glass with my dinner and then came over all peculiar and had to lie down on the settee with my eyes shut for about 30 minutes till I felt better!
I won't be doing that again...
Fingers crossed the house sale goes through ok
Thank you Vronni.Delete
I am not surprised you needed a lie down after 3 glasses of wine! Even I used to stop at two!!
Interesting about giving up wine. I stopped drinking my evening beer in April, due to hoping my stomach problems would stop. It worked! Now be sure to check your next use of a hot water bottle to be sure the lid is on correctly!ReplyDelete
I need to remind my manservant to do a proper job with the hot water bottle next time, Terra.Delete
