Better Late Than Never

We have been lagging behind everyone else but our heatwave finally got going this week with temperatures steadily rising day by day.

Yesterday I spent the morning volunteering in the local Hospice shop and walked home in the hot sun to find the tree surgeons had managed to take down the dodgy Ash tree and were just tidying up.  I didn’t envy them working in that heat.  P said the nosey neighbour's curtains were twitching a fair bit.  We are anticipating another visit from Mr Snoopy with his notebook on Sunday morning.

Today I walked to the library first thing and did my shopping early. It was still an effort walking back with the full shopping bags and I have spent the rest of the day in the cool of the house.  These thick stone walls are a godsend.  We are "only" at 27-28C here and I can only imagine what everyone is feeling in the sweltering heat across the water.

Tomorrow sees the IOM Marathon take place and P will be going to help out. He is not taking part  thank goodness.  I am not sure it is a good idea to run a marathon in that heat on a route with hardly any shade.

I shall stay at home and consume lots of iced tea.

  1. We have been lucky that it has started to cool off a bit here. August is flying by so quickly and soon Autumn will be upon us and the chill will start moving in...

    1. That's what we have been saying. Our summer has been a little starting and now it will soon be over.

  2. You need a big tug to tow the IoM north a bit.

    1. Too cold up there. We could run into an iceberg. Oh wait, haven't they all melted?

  3. I would love your recipe for iced tea if you can spare the time and it isn't a secret please. I have tried a few recipes and nothing is a great success and I have a Tesco order coming on Thursday

    1. I don't do anything fancy. Just make a pot of my usual tea but with some slices of lemon; strain - or remove the tea bags - and leave to cool; half fill a glass jug with ice and fresh lemon slices then pour over the cold tea.
I don't take sugar but you could probably sweeten it if wanted.

  4. I think they should postpone the marathon as someone might die.

As for lugging the shopping home, why not invest in a tartan shopping trolley - the sort that little old ladies used to use? Then you would be able to bring more groceries home with you.

    1. Thanks for the suggestion YP . A tartan shopping trolley sounds like just the thing. I wonder if I could find a ride-on version?

    2. You could certainly get a ride-on version JayCee! They are called mobility scooters. Remember to pick one with "Go Faster" stripes down the sides.

  5. Perhaps P could sit outside the house one Sunday and stare down Mr. Snoopy--while resting his bow and arrow nearby. :)

The heatwave over here (Eastern US) just broke--was 15c this morning (bliss), going to 27c this afternoon (instead of 37c), but without the intense humidity we usually get. Breathable. Perhaps this air mass will reach you all next week.

    1. We have been told to expect fresher weather with rain. Normal summer for us.

  6. I had to check IOM (Isle of Man). In my language, hebrew, the word (pronounced (yiom ) means Day.
Stone walls block the heat. We've got an average of 30-32C, but it's humidity that "kills".

    1. Ah sorry , I shorten Isle of Man to IOM out of laziness.
Yes the stone walls are good for keeping the indoor temperature constant. Quite comfortable at the moment.

  7. As I write, London is registering 31C and in two more hours it should be 33C. The heat never seems to fall in the night and I am melting - our housebricks seem to soak it up and make me feel like a roast chicken.

  8. I'm drinking ice tea too just now. Out temps have gone down a few degrees so I can sit inside and watch tv. I hope your evening temps are much lower and you can get a good sleep

    1. Thankfully the temperature drops a few degrees overnight so it is not too uncomfortable for sleeping.

  9. Had to smile at YP's suggestion. I have such a trolley, though it's not tartan. It was bright red but has faded to dusky pink from years of standing outside mainly unused. It's only ever been used for taking groceries, and various bulky items from the car to the kitchen.
I'm not sure you can get a ride-on version, but seriously one would help you with your shopping. It doesn't have to be tartan (perish the thought!) there are some very smart ones about, which seem to hold a good number of items. You can then step-it out just to prove you're not a little old lady, instead of staggering, almost bent double under the load!

    1. Hmm... still not tempted. My walking companion gave me a very handy daysack, like the old fashioned school plimsoll bags but in a lightweight nylon. I can get quite a bit in that and carrying it on my back seems much easier. Although carrying anything in this heat is daunting.

  10. Here the air conditioners are a wonderful solution for days like this. Almost all summer they work long hours and the heat is bearable.

  11. It's cool in our house downstairs too - lovely to walk into from outside. Warmer upstairs but not too hot unless you go in the south facing bedrooms at the front. I shall glad to have it a bit cooler and with some RAIN for the poor garden.

    1. I am hoping that we have sufficient rain (overnight only please!) to mean I don't need to use the watering can so often.

    2. You can get them in UK https://www.checkfrank.co.uk/winther-donkey-classic/382784 unfortunately more expensive than the tartan shopping trolley option but then our Donkey is over 20 years old and still looks like new (there's a price for longevity).

  14. Ice tea sounds good in this weather. I'm drinking loads of decaf tea, think it's less diuretic than regular tea?

    2. I had a nosy neighbor once. He also would snoop from behind his windows. So I began to wave wildly in his direction every time that I saw the curtains move. They dropped back into place pretty quickly. He was a very odd duck.
