Christmas Spirit

Despite the widespread air of doom and gloom hanging over us all, I have noticed that most people around me appear to be quite cheerful and getting into the general feeling of bonhomie and goodwill that is, after all, supposed to be the spirit of Christmas.

I did my last shift of 2022 this morning at the Hospice shop.  It was noticeably quiet there today after the pre-Christmas rush to buy gifts, cards and decorations.  After sorting through the few bags of donations and arranging new stock on the rails, I joined my colleague at the till to chat and to greet the customers that came in to browse.  Every one of them was in good spirits and wishing each other a Happy Christmas and the mood was infectious.  Even though I had to walk home through strong winds and heavy rain, the feeling of good humour stayed with me.

P has just gone to meet his friend for a pint at the local and I am having a hot chocolate and slice of cake.

Elfie is having a little dance to the music on his biscuit tin radio ...

  1. I love the way Elfie darts from place to place - I never know where he is going to turn up next.

    1. That's what my niece's two little ones find exciting, wondering what they'll find each day when Elfie turns up. I shall be sad when they no longer believe!

  2. As a teenager I worked in Boots, Saturdays and holidays, and really loved working over Christmas. Everyone was so cheerful.

  4. I'm quite happy to forget the doom and gloom for a while. Lots of nice happenings today here. The sun was shining, yeh sorry about that. Had coffee with a friend. Found some exotic chocs, toblerone, for stockings and a bottle of fizz for me and friend.
Hope the festive spirit holds for a day or two

  6. Son and DiL are doing Elf on the shelf for their two children. Son said they are just about to head off to bed when they remember they've got to think of something naughty for Elf to do - think he wishes they'd never started!

  11. I went very early to do my shopping at a big out-of-town Sainsbury's yesterday. It was like being in Trafalgar Square on New Year's Eve.

    1. Ugh. The downside to Christmas in a big town.

  12. Seems elfie is making an effort to behave himself!
Seeing Cro's comment about Christmas crowds, it's all very low-key here. I went to the Saturday market early (just after 9) to buy a new pair of "house" shoes - hardly a soul about. Popped into Lidl, and again not as busy as it usually is on Saturdays. Thankfully the Christmas panic mode has never really caught on here. I still have nightmare memories of the years in the UK when I was up early on 24th, in Waitrose by 7:30 a.m. and lucky if I got out a couple of hours later. One year was exceptionally busy and the staff were walking up and down the lines of those waiting to pay with huge boxes of Cadbury's Roses chocolates - constantly offering them. I think I must have eaten at least a quarter of a pound before I finally reached the till!

    1. Oh my. I remember when we lived in the UK I dreaded the pre Christmas shopping frenzy in the supermarket. That is something I definitely do not miss here!
