So Weary

Lately I have been feeling quite tired most days and lacking in much motivation to get started on all the little projects I had planned.

Today I finished my volunteering shift at the charity shop an hour earlier than usual as I was feeling tired. I walked home but my legs felt like lead.  After lunch I lay down on the sofa and fell asleep for two hours.

I know it can't be down to my thyroid problem as I had all the blood tests last month. Only a slightly raised white cell count but everything else was normal.  I am over last week's cold now so it can't be that.

Perhaps it is the gloomy winter season or just me getting older!

  1. Some times I think it may just be a combination of things that get us down. Gloomy weather usually doesn't help (not getting enough sunlight!), and even getting over a common cold may demand more energy as we get older. Hope you have a restful weekend!

    1. Thank you. I don't have any plans for this weekend so probably just some more sofa time!

    2. I think it is that time of the year.I am in “can’t be bothered “phase.

  2. I take multivitamins when I go on one of my hiking, (roughing it) music festival trips and they help a lot. I am very tired this week after all my digging and weeding and mucking out all week. The older I get I find my recovery and energy levels are not the same. Porridge is also very good for energy. Years ago cart horses were fed oats to give them energy to work hard in the fields.

  3. That doesn't sound like you at all. Napping the weekend away beside your heater is probably a good idea. For a start.

    1. I do feel as though my battery has wound down. I should follow Dave's advice and up my vitamin intake, plus some porridge.

  4. My husband suffers from "borderline" hypothyroidism and it has been proven since he had his really low meds (lowest you can have) doubled, that perhaps the blood test results weren't as accurate as they would have us believe . . . He is now no longer going round the room holding onto the furniture and leaning against the wall.

    1. Oh, that's not good (the dodgy test results I mean). Were the tests carried out locally? Perhaps your hospital's lab equipment needs upgrading!
At least he is now getting the right level of medication, thank goodness.

    2. I think they just did the most basic of tests - TSH. Don't think we're at the right level yet . . . Hope you are better soon anyway. Winter drags us down.

  5. Another trip to a doctor who is sympathetic wouldn't do any harm.

    1. It is very difficult to see a family doctor here at the moment. I did have a telephone consultation with mine recently and he ordered blood tests which all seemed fine. I may try again if this lethargy doesn't improve.

  6. I wake up tired but that could be due to the MS waking me up to go to the bathroom three/four times a night. I also have Hypothyroidism so with tiredness from that and fatigue from the MS it's a wonder I do anything at all. Do what Dave suggests and take a multi-vitamin pill as it may have some effect to you.

    1. I am sorry to hear that you have MS as well as the hypothyroidism. My weariness is nothing in comparison.

    2. Thank you, Jaycee. Nothing can be done for my tiredness but the multi-vitamins might be the answer for you.

  7. Oh dear JayCee this seems to be is a worldwide ‘complaint’ at the moment. I’ve yet to find out my results - appt next week. Apart from possibly a low T3/4 count I thought mine could have been the aftermath of my recent (mid December) bout of covid but the gp wasn’t going down that path. I’m thinking multiB might be the boost I need

    1. I shall try the vitamin solution. It can't do any harm I suppose.

  8. Hope your energy picks up, JayCee. Rest and relax when you need to - Spring weather will help when it gets here! :)

  9. Maybe a bit of both. Don't standard blood tests check for vitamin deficiencies? As I understand the science, for most people there is little reason to take vitamins if you diet is reasonable. Even the great vitamin D deficiency, made by the absorption of sunlight, is proving to be in sunny Australia something of a hoax.

    1. My previous GP told me to take a daily Vitamin D tablet as a routine blood test showed a deficiency. I have always assumed my diet takes care of the rest but I could be missing something.

  10. Sorry to hear about your current weariness JayCee. As I am not a health guru, I am unable to offer any meaningful advice but arguably you need to keep the blood flowing and the lungs pumping by keeping up the walking habit. Also don't forget that "A Mars a day helps you work rest and play"!

    1. I have been quite breathless for some time as a result of my allergies and my recent cold and flu bugs. I imagine the breathlessness has a big part to play in causing the tiredness.
A Mars a day helps me get very fat!

  12. Have you tested for Diabetes? On most days I have a bout of extreme tiredness. It lasts for a very short time, during which I have a quick nap. I think your body is telling you to do the same.

    1. My blood sugar levels were fine at my last check up so I hope that diabetes is not an issue.

Have you had Covid? I had these symptoms daily for two months post Covid then they stopped being a daily occurrence but returned every few days/weeks or so for a few months afterwards. Gradually the frequency has receded. All my body weaknesses were “enhanced” post Covid eg my arthritis was so bad I could hardly walk but again, this has receded. Good luck.

    1. Well, when I had a horrible virus a couple of months ago I did a couple of Covid tests but they were negative. Of course, that doesn't necessarily mean that I didn't have it!

  14. Sorry to hear that you're feeling low Jaycee. I suspect that it's a seasonal thing - this part of the year is usually the worst when the weather is wet and cold, and winter seems to hang on.
Like others, I suggest you try vitamin supplements - I've found they help enormously, and take the effervescent type. If you can summon up the energy to take even a short walk, that would help too.
Even here, where the sun shines more than in the rest of Europe, people complain of feeling tired and listless.

    1. I did take a short walk this morning just to buy the newspaper and milk. The fresh air helps but I still feel tired. I am going to tackle the cryptic crossword now to see if my brain is awake.

  15. I was feeling that exact way, as well! My Doctor told me to skip taking my Sunday Levothyroxine tab ( .88mg) That way I'd actually be lowering the dosage to .75mg a day. I feel alive again. Your levels can Show normal but there are several components they Don't check...
    This is just my experience...
