Cancelled

We have recently booked a short break during May; a week exploring the town of Bordeaux and its environs.

However, the news coverage over the past week has been less than encouraging with some disturbing scenes like this in several French towns and cities ...

We decided to cancel our trip as it does not bode well for an enjoyable holiday.

I checked online for a suitable alternative and P managed to ring the airline and successfully change our booking.  Same week, different location.

I wonder if France's tourist industry is suffering any noticeable losses as a result of the protests?

  1. I thought your blog title was going to be about the Fury and Usyk fight being cancelled. I couldn't imagine them rioting in England about the rising of the pension age. Victoria Wood once said that the only time England would have a revolution is if they cancelled car boot sales.

  2. A lot of people here wish they would "raise" our pension age to 64.

  3. Bordeaux can wait. I can confirm that Withernsea on the sub-tropical East Yorkshire coast is glorious in Maytime. Luxurious accommodation is still available at The Cedarville Guesthouse. Once visited, Withernsea can never be forgotten.

  4. How frustrating to have protests involving people setting fires. Peaceful protests yes, I have been in quite a few. But violence, no. I hope you find a peaceful place for your vacation.

    1. It does seem to be in an awful mess over there at the moment. A lucky escape for us I feel.

  6. Here we try to work as long as possible, usually are happy to do it to allow the Social Security system to stay afloat for future retirees to also receive hard-earned benefits. I worked 'til 65. My husband retired at 66, went back as a consultant until age 73 and would still be working now (he's almost 83) if they would let him!
Sorry your holiday had to be cancelled but I'm sure you will find a lovely replacement location - enjoy and relax somewhere warm and interesting.

    1. Our current retirement age is 66, rising to 68 soon. I have to say that I am not sure that I would have been able to keep up if I had continued to work at my previous job past retirement age.

  7. Train disruption in England has been on our minds, especially as we have booked tickets to London to fly out that evening. Thankfully it seems to be settling down.

You have easy access to so many wonderful European countries, so I am sure wherever you choose to visit will be good.

  8. They're always revolting against something; we ignore it. I've even be known to 'hoot' in support of some angry communists, just so they won't smash my car windows.

  10. Well, I'll be in Paris in a little less than four weeks (and in London the previous week). Hoping the Tube, Eurostar and the Metro will all be functioning. At least I have friends in Paris who will know what is going on. Will let you know how it goes. Hope your new location works out well for relaxation and retreat. Mary
